8th Grade ELA
The Readington School District's middle school literacy program emphasizes a balanced instructional approach that integrates authentic literature, word study, and writing skills. By eighth grade, students are expected to read challenging texts independently and engage with "stretch" texts from ninth and tenth-grade levels, supported by teacher scaffolding. The program includes a diverse range of genres, such as narratives, poetry, historical fiction, and informational texts, and aims to develop students’ skills in reading subgenres, essays, and digital media.
In writing, students practice narrative, informative, and argumentative texts. Vocabulary development focuses on understanding nuances, affixes, and roots, with new words introduced through various methods, including direct instruction and conversation. The curriculum is responsive to students' developmental stages, allowing for differentiated instruction that keeps students engaged. Regular assessments inform instructional strategies, aiming to foster independence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Overall, the program equips students with the knowledge and skills to meet diverse audience demands and tasks across subjects.
